Directions

By Rail: Ely station is served by First Capital Connect trains from London King’s Cross (via Cambridge) and from King’s Lynn, by Central Trains from Peterborough and Norwich, and by Anglia Trains from Ipswich, Norwich, and Peterborough. Trains run hourly from King’s Cross (at 45 mins past the hour, currently) and take just over an hour to reach Ely.

By Air: The preferred airport is Stansted, which has direct rail service to Ely. From Heathrow or Gatwick, take trains or the Underground to King’s Cross and catch a train to Ely.

By Road: Coveney is to the west of Ely, a short way off the A10 and A142 main roads. These directions cover the four approaches from the A10 (Cambridge and Downham Market) and the A142 (Chatteris and Newmarket). Getting to a start point is left as an exercise for the reader.

From the South: Take the A10 north from Cambridge to Ely. Just before Ely, follow the A10 Ely bypass by turning left. Go straight on at the second roundabout, passing the BP petrol station on your left. In about a mile, turn left at the crossroads signed for Coveney into West Fen Road (see below).

From the West: Take the A142 East from Chatteris toward Ely. After Sutton, there is a Q8 petrol station on the right. In about a mile, turn left at the crossroads (signed Coveney). On entering Coveney, carry straight on and past the village sign. At the triangular junction, take the left fork, signed for Little Downham and Pymoor, and Bell House is the third house on the right, just past the stables. It has blue shutters on the windows on the front of the house.

From the East: Take the A142 from Newmarket to Ely. On entering Ely, turn left at the first roundabout, and follow the A142 to its junction with the A10. Carry straight on at both roundabouts, thus joining the A10 towards Downham Market and passing the BP petrol station on your left. In about a mile, turn left at the crossroads signed for Coveney into West Fen Road (see below).

From the North: Take the A10 south from Downham Market. After passing Littleport and taking the bypass round Ely, turn right at the crossroads signed for Coveney into West Fen Road (see below).

West Fen Road: This is the way into Coveney from the A10 Ely bypass. It is a typical Fenland drove: long straight roads connected by sudden right-angle bends. On entering Coveney, turn right at the triangle, signed for Way Head, Downham and Pymoor. Bell House is the third house on the right, just past the stables. It has blue shutters on the windows on the front of the house.
